REALISTIC PORTRAITS IN COLORED PENCIL BY Karen HullWell worth the money! The first impression this book had on me upon opening the package was, ‘WOW! What great aesthetic quality and size!’ And those attributes don’t hold a candle to the inside! You will be pleased and amazed at the detailed and explicit instruction making this tutorial easy to follow, and fun to work through. Karen explains clearly, even using text boxes and arrows to be sure we see the area she is describing. Most of her photos are half a page or larger so it easy to see the amazing details she has created.Karen begins the book with materials and valuable techniques for each area of the facial structure. Once you have worked through a tutorial to practice Karen’s techniques, you could easily use your own reference photo and apply her explanations of each section of the face, nose, ears, eyes, wrinkles, hair, teeth, skin and much more, and have great success.I chose to do Project 2 first, Rendering Aged Skin on pages 48-66. (See my WIP on black paper below) That may seem like a lot of pages, but remember, the photos are huge. I have always been drawn to the character in the faces of elderly people and this project is perfect for me. It is very detailed, so it is not a quick project, but there are 3 others to choose from covering a multitude of techniques. Also, I decided it was easiest to divide the plethora of pencils needed into 3 jars by brand. Yes, Karen uses a lot of pencils to make her work beautiful, but don't let that deter you! It's pretty easy to find each one as needed because she uses exact names and brands each time.Previously, I had not thought I could be a portrait artist, but now I have hope. A few months ago, I worked through ‘Katie,’ a tutorial by Karen Hull, which gave me more confidence. This time I wanted something even more challenging. My goal in following these tutorials is not to become the next, “Karen Hull,†but to become the best version of myself. @Quarto Creates
Realistic Portrait in Colored Pencil by Karen HullI'd give this book a 10 star rating if I could.....it's really that good! I love the encouragement Karen gives her reader in her introduction. Her information on tools and art materials is invaluable, and I was amazed at the different brands of pencils that Karen recommends using, not to mention the various colors. Her attention to detail is remarkable and her tips throughout the book are so helpful to the aspiring and advanced artist alike. I've never seen such detailed instructions given in a "how-to" art book, but they're in abundance in this book. I knew exactly how to start the project, which pencils and which brands to use and when and where to use them.....including the amount of pressure to apply in order to attain the "perfect portrait."If you've ever aspired to draw anything, but especially a portrait, treat yourself to this new book, Karen Hull's Realistic Portraits in Colored Pencil. You'll not be disappointed with either the price of the book or the results of your own work. Get your copy today and be amazed at your own artistic abilities. As Karen put it, "creating a photo-realistic portrait can be relatively easy", and she shows you how in her excellent, easy to understand, step-by-step instructions.
Very cool book but nowhere when I bought this book did it even mention you need Caran d'Ache Luminance and Pablo. She mostly uses these two types along with Prisma and Faber Castel. She does say you do not have to have expensive pencils to do so and come up with your own but I like to learn step by step at times to improve my technique. Just my way. Oh, there is one picture showing she uses them but didn't expect it to be throughout the book. That is what I get for jumping at a new book too soon. Great techniques but needs to let the public know what you use so to know to buy or not to buy your book. Now saving to get these types of pencils. I am weird but I like more info.
I have been a huge fan of Karen Hull and her artwork for many years. She is able to draw any texture with any medium and is gifted at communicating the how-to’s of this to her students throughout the world. Karen is not only a brilliant artist, but an admired teacher and skilled writer. Realistic Portraits in Colored Pencil is a magnificent book! Karen’s years of experience are distilled into friendly text with gorgeous artworks that illustrate the topics in each chapter. So many of us have exclaimed, “HOW does she DO that?!†when Karen posts yet another stunning artwork on social media. In this large-size, glossy book Karen reveals her secrets, suggestions, and specific techniques that have led to her success. The five step-by-step projects will take your breath away and give you hope that you, too, can create masterpieces like Karen’s if you follow her instructions and use the recommended materials. This book is a MUST for every single colored pencil artist, regardless of their preferred subject: portraits, still lifes, animals or landscapes. Karen’s generous instruction regarding ALL things colored pencil will help each one of us with whatever piece we choose to create. I am absolutely delighted to own this treasure of a book and highly recommend it to all!
