Absolutely riveting, from the first page to the last. This book reveals an outrage, and should be read far and wide. It’s a revelation on many levels. While it’s a deeply moving personal memoir, it’s also an unflinching expose of outrageous national security failures; an inspirational call for resilience in the face of betrayal of national trust, and a beacon of light for future generations seeking to provide enlightened leadership.In just over 200 pages, Pru Bushnell guides us through her personal experience of the horrific Al Qaida bombing of the American Embassy in Kenya in 1998 where she was serving as US Ambassador. This is a most rare perspective for many reasons. We follow her, step by step, on that terrible day as she emerges from the bloody rubble to face the aftermath of the attack. We learn what that involves, for her personally and for her in her official capacity as US Ambassador in a stricken country. We learn of her repeated efforts to increase security at the embassy over years prior to the bombing, only to be rebuffed at top echelons of our government. We have access to her meticulous research and documentation of what our national security branches actually knew about terrorist threats at the time. And we learn that these same security failures at top leadership levels continued right up to, and beyond, the September 11, 2001 attacks. They persist to the present day, (although certain improvements are noted).As the outrage unfolds in historical timeline, it is possible to see just how effectively policy was obstructed by hubris and myopic power wars, especially at the very top levels of our security branches. If this sounds like it might be somewhat dry reading, rest assured, it is not. This is because nothing is discussed in generalities. Instead we have names, dates, documents and declassified reports, presented in clear context. We learn a lot about who did what, and who knew what, and when. We learn who the terrorists were and what they said while in custody, and we learn when they were released by security agencies without any explanation given. But there’s far too much information to relay in this brief review. A careful reading will be a real eye-opener. It certainly was for me.Yet the book leaves us with hope and a road map for the future. My personal favorite is the emphasis on compassionate leadership and a turn away from military solutions to terrorist threats.We owe Pru Bushnell a debt of gratitude for this wonderful book. May it find a wide audience here and abroad.
Prudence Bushnell weaves the tale of her career in the US Foreign Servicewith the dismal tale of the so called War on Terror and the twists and turns of a nation trying to tackle one of the hardest foreign policy challenges in history. With brash honesty, she exposes what it's like to be a woman leader, and shares her thoughts about true leadership, as well as her suggestions for how to transform the US Foreign Service. This is a book of tragic history, both personal and national, difficult to read yet well worth the struggle.
I had no idea what ambassadors and other Foreign Service workers really did and the incredible responsibilities bestowed upon them. I was hooked from the second paragraph in the preface until the end of the epilogue. What an amazing woman, and what a well written book reporting on her experiences and frustrations. I highly recommend this book to others.
Bushnell tells this story in three parts. First comes the personal terror of an ambassador nearly killed in the Nairobi terroriss bombing. Second comes a reflection on what should have known, what could have been known, when, and by whom. Third comes implications for US diplomacy and military action in light of Presidential election results. This book gave me opportunity to think about a US embassy beyond spies and formalities. A retired State Department career employee showed me a list of interesting books like this one.
Well written, put incident into perspective, furthered considerably my understanding of whole picture.
